CLAUDY JONGSTRA

Vertical Gardens by Claudy Jongstra at Restaurant ONE

Claudy Jongstra is known worldwide for her monumental works of felted wool and silk, dyed with natural pigments, often in public buildings. Her oeuvre also includes smaller works in many international museums, as well as in private and corporate collections.

She designed an exceptional artwork for Restaurant ONE in Roermond. Using edible plant dyes and rusted iron, she created the colour palette for Vertical Gardens.

She took all the materials for this work from her garden, the forest, and a method she calls ‘industrial foraging’, in which she reuses old, rusted metal.

This diptych reflects the rectangular vegetable and flower beds of our kitchen garden: a source of an abundance of ingredients, recurring inspiration and welcome down-to-earthness. At the same time, the work embraces the rusty history of the ECI factory in material and colour.

Chosen from many thousands of votes, Claudy Jongstra was named Dutch Artist of the Year 2019.
